As you inhale, begin to straighten your arms and lift your torso and legs a few inches off the floor, keeping toes tucked or feet flat. Bring the soles of your feet to touch and allow your knees to flop open as in Butterfly. Tuck your toes underneath so you are on the balls of your feet. Dr. Angela Mattke: Being a kid or a teenager today is both the same and completely different than when we were kids. Yoga is an ancient practice that does immense good for our whole being. A seasoned athlete, I couldn’t imagine what yoga could possibly offer for me besides, perhaps, some nice sitting and humming. Fresh out of teacher training, young, and hopelessly idealistic to boot, I agreed to teach my first-ever yoga class for children at my local fine arts center. Bean tip: Younger children will have a more difficult time with this position and it is fine to stick with a Cobra pose. Bean tip: If you see a child’s chin jutting up towards the ceiling, take a folded blanket and place it underneath his/her head and neck to allow the muscles of the neck and shoulders to relax. We could meow and moo during cat/cow, bark our way into down dog, and, well, I just knew I’d figure out the rest later.



I’d been teaching ballet classes there since high school, and when the director asked if I’d be interested in offering after-school yoga classes, I immediately responded with an enthusiastic yes! Ultimately in Yoga REASONING won’t help because reasoning is narrow and limited. As a result, it’s important to provide them with activities that will help them focus and develop their motor skills. Playful yoga poses, games, stories, partner poses, massage, and more help children develop sensory balance, body awareness, and loving communication. With the demands of school, access to toys, gadgets, and electronics, children are overworked and overstimulated. Moms, Dads and caregivers are welcome! If anxiety is a concern, the therapist will teach children and families ways to handle worries around food.
