How to Replace an
audi keyless go G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test since there are several connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and
fob the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.
I don't know what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.
A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good news is they are very affordable and easy to find particularly if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, which is what we have. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your
audi a3 key fob replacement because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This part is common across the
