The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. During the recording of the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and embarks on an extensive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa during their recent tour.
